Rey Mysterio is one of the most popular wrestlers in WWE history, from his masks to his high flying style, his underdog story had everyone gripped throughout his career which saw such highlights as winning the Royal Rumble, dominating the Cruiserweight division and even becoming World Heavyweight Champion.

Unfortunately for Mysterio his later years with the company were plagued by injuries, and after 13 years with the WWE his contract was allowed to expire in 2015. Since then he has continued to wrestle on the independent circuit, most notably competing for AAA and more recently Lucha Underground.

However on former WCW superstar, Konnan's podcast he revealed that the veteran is considering a return to the WWE if he can get a part time, reduced schedule, a rumor that seemingly may have more weight than it first seems after announcements made by Dave Meltzer.

Problems overseas

According to Meltzer both AAA and Lucha Underground were planning on building their brands around both Mysterio and Alberto Del Rio this year, obviously with Del Rio already back with WWE that has caused a major issue, and now Mysterio is considering following suit, there could be even more problems coming their way.

Meltzer is of the belief that this issue is telling of the status of both companies, that even though they are impressing and starting to make waves in the wrestling world, they still can't compete with WWE to keep their bigger names such as these.

It was also reported this week that Mysterio is having some issues with AAA over pay, after what has been described as,"shady business practices" as they are rumored to owe Mysterio money for appearances he made. The veteran superstar is still under contract with the company, but hasn't worked for them since 2015 and it would appear that the reason for that has been revealed with these statements.

Could he return?

With Mysterio clearly unsettled and frustrated by AAA, a return to the place where he made his biggest impact might not be as far fetched as it may seem, and he has always maintained he left on good terms and with the door open, previously stating that, "If the opportunity comes about in the future, and there is interest from both parties, then why not?”

Given WWE's current injury problems seeing many of the company's major names sit on the sidelines, attempting to re-sign Mysterio wouldn't be a bad move whilst he can still compete at a good standard, and the WWE Universe would certainly welcome him back with open arms.
