Clash of Champions; no matter how many times you say the name of the pay-per-view it still sounds as if there is a key word missing.

Nevertheless, the event was still an action packed show with a number of important matches taking place but how did it rank compared to SmackDown Live's Backlash?

It is no longer A New Day

Kicking off the PPV and gold was already being defended as The New Day in their 399-day reign took on The Club.

With so many options left on the table to make Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson look like a meaningful force, it seems WWE have missed the boat as their once fearsome nature sails away.

In a match that quickly saw the former IWGP Tag-Team champions gain an early advantage and almost score a quick pinfall, this was the highlight in what turned out to be a lackluster start for COC.

The New Day were forced to resort to relying on Francesca, yes the trombone, in order to eventually score the pinfall as Anderson was on the receiving end of the attack from Xavier Woods.

With the challenger in a weakened state it allowed Big E to hit the big ending allowing the champions to retain.

Perks of the job

In his first debut in front of the WWE Universe, TJ Perkins pitted his Cruiserweight Championship on the line in his first defense.

His opponent was no rookie as in stepped The Brian Kendrick who won the right to face him last week in a fatal-four-way match to crown a number one contender.

The two went at it with the high flying style of the cruiserweight classic toned down to place the emphasis on the wrestling ability of both men.

Despite Kendrick using the ring and its surroundings to the best of his ability he could not put Perkins away as the champion eventually locked in the kneebar submission; a hold that is becoming deadly to any and all opponents.

The best of never?

With the crowd firmly but surprisingly all for the best of seven series final as Cesaro took on Sheamus it all collapsed as the WWE Universe were left rolling in anger when the final bell was rung.

Both men put on a phenomenal show with the stakes never before been this high, as a future title shot awaits the victor.

However, as The Swiss Superman and The Celtic Warrior went toe-to-toe their own health never became a factor to which they considered.

They duo brawled for a good 15 minutes before tumbling into the crowd, the official called for medical attention and this is where things got interesting.

Despite Cesaro landing squarely on his head just moments earlier he continued to fight on but the official deemed it necessary to step in and check on the health of both men.

The referee called for the bell as he felt that allowing the match to continue could have long-term repercussions for either men, despite both wishing to continue.

Cesaro made his way back into the ring but his fighting partner Sheamus was unable to accompany him as he was hauled backstage by medical staff with the climax to the best of seven series being addressed on Monday Night Raw.

The battle of the best friends

Despite sounding like the name of the season finale of a Game of Thrones episode this match was however the best way to describe the bout between Chris Jericho and Sami Zayn.

The veteran is currently the 'best friend' of WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens while his opponent is his former.

Zayn started well and almost scored a huge victory but could never connect with the fatal helluva kick; which allowed Jericho to get a foothold in this match.

Y2J's experience eventually paid off as he lured The Underdog from the Underground into a false sense of security just enough for him to land the code-breaker to pick up the pin-fall.

The Women steal the show

It has been stated recently over the past six months but the women of WWE have been incredible in their evolution, yet they continue to raise the bar without hesitation.

Charlotte had the odds stacked firmly against her as she defended her Women's Title against both Bayley and Sasha Banks; both of whom are known best friends.

The Nature Girl did have one trick up her sleeve however in her prodigy Dana Brooke, who saved the champion many times throughout the match.

Brooke had a say on the outcome of the triple threat also as she held The Boss's boot, preventing her from breaking up the pin-fall that Charlotte was attempting.

A big boot from the Dirtiest Woman in the Game saw Bayley wiped clean out allowed her to retain, crushing the dream of Banks.

Reigning in the United States

As well as the evolution of the women's division, another evolution has saw a man climb back up the ranks of WWE following a difficult few months.

Roman Reigns arrived in Indiana to a series of boos and jeers with The Big Dog clearly not the favorite heading into the match.

Rusev used this to his advantage with his dominance being approved by the crowd as a series of super-kicks prevented the former Shield member from finding his groove.

A spear out of nowhere looked as if the United States title would be going home with Reigns early on but Lana protected her husband as she pulled him out of the ring to safety before being sent to the back.

With the champion able to catch his breath he had the accolade locked in but somehow the former World Champion spun out of the hold to then find the energy to hit a second spear.

One..two...three and the new United States Champion is Roman Reigns as the 31-year-old simply smiled in the ring as he looked to put his recent hardships behind him.

Drink it OwEN man

The main event... was just like much of the PPV marred by the involvement of a third party, with the integrity of the matches an important talking point.

Seth Rollins was a man on a vengeful mission to claw back what he feels is his WWE Universal Title, a title he was cheated out of by former mentor Triple H.

Owens however is a man who knows people, with The Game not in attendance, his 'best friend' however way as Jericho showed up to offer support.

However his appearance quickly affected The Architect who chased the veteran around the ring before climbing back in and almost being on the receiving end of a pop-up power-bomb.

Instead, Rollins jumped over the champion and inadvertently knocked out the official with the match descending into chaos.

With The Man sensing victory he tried to wake up the referee but to no avail until finally RAW commissioner Stephanie McMahon ushers one down to the ring.

However, Owens following his brief breather hit the pop up power-bomb on Rollins, laying out the former Shield member to retain his championship.

Stephanie walked back behind the curtain with a hint of a smile portrayed across her face with many questions still to be asked, while Jericho and Owens celebrated in united triumph.

Final thought

A thoroughly enjoyable event with a real assertion placed on the champions resorting to any tactics necessary to hold onto their gold.

The PPV seemed to have been sprung upon us without any prior warning yet it still delivered on an occasion where things could have been disastrous.
