Steven Finn has become the third England player to be sent home from their tour to Australia.

The fast bowler has struggled for any sort of consistency this winter and was the only member of England’s 18 man Ashes squad to not make an appearance in the 5-0 whitewash.

His return home is to “work on technical aspects of his game” according to an ECB statement although England’s one-day coach Ashley Giles says that the 24-year-old needs a break from the sport.

"In the short term, he needs a couple of weeks away. Steven is not selectable at the moment." Said Giles.

Finn wasn’t picked for the first ODI loss and the following warm-up match; he will now miss the remaining four ODIs and three twenty20 matches.

The Middlesex seamer has taken 90 wickets from 23 Test matches with another 59 ODI wickets but he has struggled with his technique ever since a change in the rules meant that a no-ball was awarded against a bowler when he knocks the stumps off at the non-strikers end, something that Finn is susceptible to.

"Mentally, there's no problem but it does wear you down," Continued Giles.

"Sometimes through your career you go through those ups and downs.

"His timing is out. That then can affect your confidence and certainly it is not coming out as quickly as he would like.

"I suppose he has been in this state for at least a couple of months and it hasn't worked. We feel now it is best to take him out of it. Sometimes you do have to do that."

Not all hope has been lost for a return to international cricket as he was today named as part of a 30-man provisional squad for the ICC World T20 tournament, in March.

Middlesex’s coach Angus Fraser has backed the decision along with BBC commentator Jonathan Agnew who commented that Finn needed to be put out of his misery after watching him struggle to bowl in the nets.
