A disappointing World Cup for England ended with a low-key nine wicket win over Afghanistan.

Neither team had anything to play for in terms of qualification, but England had to ensure there was no further embarrassment. Afghanistan, though, had the chance to pour more misery on Peter Moores' side.

There was to be no upset, with the minnows struggling to get going in a reduced overs match due to rain.

Afghanistan batted 36.2 overs before the rain ended their innings. They struggled to 111-7 with only Shafiqullah making a notable score of 30.

Chris Jordan was the pick of the English bowlers with 2-13. Ravi Bopara also picked up two wickets, and there was a wicket each for James Anderson, Stuart Broad and James Tredwell. The English bowlers were never troubled, and wickets fell in regular intervals.

The chase was never in danger, with England coasting to victory by nine wicktes, finishing on 101-1 (D/L). Ian Bell top scored with 52 not out, while Alex Hales hit a quick 37. James Taylor was there at the end with Bell, finishing on 8 not out.

Hamid Hassan picked up the only wicket for Afghanistan. Hassan finished with figures of 1-17 off five overs.

This wraps up an awful tournament for England, with many expecting them to qualify from the group at least. Consistently under-performing and poor execution of the basic skills led them to defeat after defeat.

Moores will hope to repair some of his and his sides' reputation when they play the West Indies in a three match test series next month. The challenge ahead for the side is huge, and there is a lot of work to be done if they are to be considered contenders for future competitions.

Afghanistan can take a lot of positives from this tournament, they've showed promise on plenty of occasions, and they can build on this to ensure a promising future for the war-torn country.
