India 302-6 (Rohit 137, Raina 65, Taskin 3-69) beat Bangladesh 193 (Nasir 35, Yadav 4-31, Shami 2-27) by 109 runs.

Rohit Sharma’s maiden World Cup century propelled India to a convincing 109 run win over Bangladesh at Melbourne and send the defending champions into the semi finals.

His century along with a brisk 65 from Suresh Raina laid the platform and was backed up brilliantly by Umesh Yadav as Bangladesh were bowled out for 193.

After an ever-impressive group stage, Bangladesh came into their maiden World Cup quarterfinal high on confidence.

Having restricted India to 125-3 in 30 overs it looked like they were on their way to another major scalp. However the occasion got the better of them as India posted a challenging total of 302-6.

Shikhar Dhawan was stumped after prodding his way to 30 of 50 balls. It was very ordinary batting from the left-hander who had been in great form coming into this game.

Rubel Hossain, fresh from sending England home had the dangerous Virat Kohli caught behind for just three as the pressure stared to build.

Ajinkya Rahane then perished for 19 as Shakib Al Hasan safely held onto a mistimed and give Taskin Ahmed his first of three wickets. India were indeed struggling at this point and it could have gotten even worse had it not been for an umpiring blunder.

An element of controversy took centre stage as Rohit was caught at deep midwicket for 90 but the square-leg umpire Aleem Dar called a no-ball to the horror of the Bangladeshi players.

Replays showed that he had met the ball waist-high well in front of his normal stance, and the ball was on its way down. Even a third umpire review was unable to overturn the dismissal as he marched onto his century.

Having bowled out all their opponents so far in the tournament, the Indian bowlers were at it again in Melbourne.

Umesh Yadav ended Tamim Iqbal’s stay at the crease as Dhoni pulled off a low catch. Confusion in the middle led to Imrul Kayes run-out for five to leave Banglasesh at 33-2.

They did their best two keep up with the required run rate but lost wickets at regular intervals and were bundled out for 193.

Rohit’s hundred to took the limelight away for the Indian bowlers who have been outstanding in the tournament.

India now await the winner from Friday’s match between Australia and Pakistan.
