Allan Donald has stepped down from his role as the bowling coach for South Africa.

Donald was appointed by Gary Kirsten in 2011 and helped the South African's to become the number one Test side in the world in 2012.

Under Donald's tutelege, Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel have become one of the most threatening bowling line-ups in the world. Steyn has become the number one ranked bowler with Philander at number seven and Morkel at eleven.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) cheif executive Haroon Lorgat praised Donald for his contribution.

"He brought great knowledge and international experience to the Proteas set up and we wish him well in his future endeavours. It's never easy to lose a legend from your ranks but we respect Allan's decision in the knowledge that we will seek his involvement in our cricket programmes in the future."

In his playing days, Donald was a fiery fast bowler. He took 330 wickets in 72 Tests at an average of 22.25 for South Africa. He went on to bring further success as the Protea's bowling coach.

"I was blessed to have worked with the best bowling attack in the world over a four-year period and leave with fond memories and experiences," said Donald.

"I have had some time to reflect after the World Cup and have come to the conclusion that the time is right to move on," added Donald.

"The last four years have been the best of my life and being involved with the Proteas in the 2015 Cricket World Cup was a goal I had set my sights on."

South Africa will aim to name a replacement before their next Tour in Bangladesh in July.
