Yorkshire's Jonny Bairstow has been called-up to England's squad for the third Ashes Test which takes place at Edgbaston, starting a week on Wednesday.

The 25-year old has been in scintilating form for Yorkshire this season, currently averaging over 100 in first class cricket including five centuries.

The middle-order batsman/keeper also helped his cause with a man-of-the-match knock for England in the recent one-day series against New Zealand,  where he scored an unbeaten 83 up at Chester-le-Street in the series decider.

Batting order re-shuffle

With the top order in horrific form as a group, there was always likely to be changes, and it was Gary Ballance who is the man to drop out.

Ballance was said to be 'naturally disappointed' to miss out, according to national selector, James Whitaker, who went on to say that the group of selectors 'are confident Gary will play a significant role for England in the future.'

Adam Lyth is also short of runs but will keep his place alongside Alastair Cook at the top of the order, with Ian Bell and Joe Root moving up a spot each to three and four respectively to make room for Bairstow in the middle-order.

Bell, playing on his home ground in Birmingham will be desperate to silence the doubters after a worrying loss of form since his excellent century in Antigua

Bowling options remain the same

Apart from Bairstow's inclusion, the rest of the 13-man squad remain the same for Edgbaston, with Adil Rashid and Steven Finn the two men hoping to force their way into the side.

Mark Wood will need to regain the pace which he seemed to lose at Lord's, and hopefully the extended break between Test matches will allow for this to happen, whilst a better cricket-wicket will really aid the rest of the attack who looked blunt in the Second Test defeat.

Squad in full: Alastair Cook (Essex), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Adam Lyth (Yorkshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Mark Wood (Durham).
