England seamer Steven Finn is set to miss the final test match of the series in South Africa, after picking up a side strain in the latter stages of the hosts second innings during the third test in Johannesburg.

Finn update

Finn was sent for scans this morning after feeling complaints during England's victory to seal the series with a test still to go in Durban. His coach Trevor Bayliss still has hope that Finn will come through this scare in time to be fit for the final test match, but the chances are slim, especially given that the visitors have already sealed a series winn.

Who could replace Finn?

If Finn is not to be fit in time for the test then England could call upon Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan or left armer Mark Footitt to replace the fast bowler for the final test.

In normal circumstances you would say that it would be Woakes who would play, but as the series has already been sealed England may opt to have another look at Jordan who last appeared in a test match for England all the way back in the spring of last year, before picking up an injury to put a stop to any Ashes hopes he may have had.

The other option is to hand Mark Fottitt a debut, the left armer has been involved in the test squads throughout both the recent series in the UAE and also the current one, but is yet to actually feature for the side and could well get his chance to impress when the action gets back underway on Friday.

Big miss for England

Finn has been superb for England in this series having picked up 11 wickets, and has been a key reason in England winning this series as he continues to show how much he offers to this England side. The quick has an incredible test strike rate of 47.4, one of the best in test cricket currently.

Finn wasn't originally in the touring party for this visit, but recovered from injury earlier than expected and has been a huge bonus to England in this series. It became even more of a boost for them as James Anderson was ruled out of the first test, which would have meant that it would have been the inexperienced duo of Chris Jordan and Chris Woakes who did play a part in the bowling attack.
