England play the first of five ODI matches against South Africa on Wednesday morning at 11.30am UK time in Bloemfontein, looking to build on their impressive 2-1 series win in the test matches which finished last week.

South Africa will be hoping that a new format will bring different fortunes for them as they go in search of the win against England to start the series on a positive note.

England come into the game after an impressive win in their warm up match against South Africa A where they made 368-7 with James Taylor scoring a hundred, while they bowled out South Africa A for 205 to win the game by 163 runs.

ODI rankings

Both teams are quite low down in the ODI rankings with South Africa sitting the higher of the two teams in fourth while England are sitting in sixth position ahead of the series.

Recent ODI form of both teams

South Africa

South Africa, in their last one day series, won 3-2 away in India which was an impressive victory given that they lost the test series out their in the sub continent, and therefore will be confident going into the series with England.

England

England won their last series 3-1 away in Pakistan in November, which was impressive as it was a series with a lot of high scores, and it was a series were many players in the England team showed what they are made of.

Key players

Ab de Villers - The South African captain is ranked as the number one batsman in the ODI rankings, and has a really impressive record in One Day internationals. De Villiers is the key for how South Africa will perform during the series after having a bad series by his high standards in the test series with England. England will want to see the end of De Villers early or else he will cause them a lot of damage.

Jos Buttler - Jos Buttler is the key for England with his late order hitting as he is seen as the man to get them to the big totals of over 300. Buttler in his last One Day international against Pakistan scored an amazing 116 off 52 balls to help his team seal the series. Buttler has recently been dropped from the test arena, so he will hoping another good series against South Africa will put him in contention to get back in the test team.

Team news

South Africa have had to call up Marchant de Lange to ODI side as injuries to Dale Steyn and Kyle Abbott have ruled both out of match against England.

South Africa are expected to much changed from the test series with the likes of Kegiso Rabada and Mourne Morkel set to led their attack.

England will have a much different team for the test series against South Africa with captain Eoin Morgan leading the side. Jason Roy is said to be a doubt for the first match after sitting out practice on Monday. The form of Alex Hales is a big worry for England going into the first game with the opener so far struggling with the seaming conditions in South Africa.

Stuart Broad returns to the ODI side for the first time since the World Cup in 2014 because of injuries to Steven Finn and Liam Plunkett, so he will be looking to make an impression on his return.
