Vuelta a España winner Chris Horner will spend the season riding for Lampre-Merida.

The 42-year-old American did not sign up to the Trek team, which took over Radioshack's WorldTour licence, at the end of last season despite becoming the oldest Grand Tour winner in history just weeks earlier.

Rumours that Horner was considering retirement refused to disappear during the off-season, aided by doping allegations.

However, the UCI later confirmed that all tests carried out on Horner had come back clear.

The Japan-born rider has signed a one-year contract with Lampre, and joins world road race champion Rui Costa on their list of new recruits.

He will ride the Giro d'Italia before attempting to defend his Vuelta crown in September.
