Rafal Majka (Tinkoff-Saxo) won the hilly Stage 14 of the Tour de France with a solo ride.

The Polish rider attacked near the foot of the final climb of the day and held off the rest of the field to take his first win of this year's race.

Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) finished second on the day and retained the yellow jersey, increasing his lead over Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), in second place, to 4'37".

Majka got himself into the day's breakaway along with 17 others, including the green jersey Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and the polka-dot jersey Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha).

The group gained an advantage of over five minutes at one stage, before Astana and NetApp-Endura ramped up the pace on the front of the peloton.

At the foot of the final climb to Risoul, Majka made his move and was able to go the distance, building an advantage of between 30 and 40 seconds.

Having finished second on Stage 13, the Pole found something extra, although by the finish his efforts had been so great that he could not muster the energy to lift both hands off the bars.

“In the final ascent I attacked in the first kilometres,” Majka said.

“I found myself in front, and I tried to keep my advantage.”

Meanwhile, Nibali had been content to let the youngster race away and take the stage win, himself settling for a sizeable increase in his advantage over the Spaniard Valverde.

“From the team car, I was told: ‘If you still have something in the tank, go for it,’” he said.

“I was looking at gaining some time over Alejandro Valverde. I heard that he cracked after I left him.

"Péraud stayed on my wheel and then sprinted! That’s cycling, I suppose."

Stage 15 sees the peloton tackle a 222 kilometre route between Tallard and Nîmes. The first half of the stage is hilly, but it flattens out and could result in a bunch sprint.
