Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) won the Clásica de San Sebastián on Saturday with a solo effort.

The 34-year-old picked up his tenth win of the season, beating Bauke Mollema (Belkin) into second place.

Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) came third, finishing with the same time as Mollema and 14 seconds down on Valverde.

A number of breaks were launched early in the race, the most significant being that of Amets Txurruka (Caja Rural), who built up a lead of more than six minutes before being reeled back in by the peloton, driven by Valverde's Movistar team.

Valverde and Rodriguez attacked near the summit of the final climb, the Bordako Tontorra. They were joined by Mollema, Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEDGE) and Mikel Nieve (Sky).

Yates was the first man to suffer from the pace, dropping out of the front group and eventually finishing nearly four minutes behind.

With four kilometres remaining, Valverde attacked, building his winning margin of 14 seconds.

Behind, Dutchman Mollema pipped Rodriguez to second, with Nieve just behind his fellow Spaniard.

“Purito told me we were going too fast and I regulated the speed on the descent so as not to lose my rhythm,” said Valverde.

“Now we’ll enjoy the victory.”
