Lampre-Merida have withdrawn Diego Ulissi from all upcoming competitions after the UCI announced that it intends to open disciplinary proceedings.

Ulissi, 25, raced for the first time since June at the Coppa Bernocchi on Tuesday, finishing 22nd.

Earlier in the week, his team had announced that Ulissi was to return to racing as they were still awaiting evidence from the UCI and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

A drug test on Stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia this year found that the Italian had almost twice the permitted amount of the banned substance salbutamol in his system.

Lampre-Merida and Ulissi both claimed the adverse reading was the result of the use of an asthma inhaler during the stage, while the rider also insisted that he had taken no more than the permitted dose.

However, immediately after the conclusion of the Coppa Bernocchi the UCI announced that disciplinary action would be taken against Ulissi.

"The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has requested Swiss Cycling, National Federation which delivered the licence to the rider, to instigate disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Diego Ulissi," read a statement.

"The charge ensues following the results management process according to which the UCI asserted that Mr. Ulissi has committed an anti-doping rule violation based on an adverse analytical finding of salbutamol in the sample collected in the scope of the 2014 Giro d'Italia on 21 May 2014."

His team responded by withdrawing the rider from all upcoming races.

"Immediately after the first race in which Diego Ulissi has taken part after his forced stop, the UCI notified the cyclist his referral to the disciplinary commission of Swiss Cycling," the team statement read.

"Finally, in the next weeks the rider and his team will have a final view about the long procedure concerning this topic.

"Respecting the internal health code of the team and the rules of MPCC, considering the referral, Ulissi won't take part in the next races."
