Trek Factory Racing have made Gert Steegmans their final signing before the 2015 season gets under way.

The 34-year-old completes the American team's roster 50 days before the start of the season at the Tour Down Under.

Steegmans had been looking for a new team after his contract with Omega Pharma-QuickStep, where he had spent four seasons, expired.

“I’m happy to have landed a team for 2015," he said.

"I’ve been training hard these last weeks and now I can focus on training without having to worry about contract negotiations.

"Trek Factory Racing is a great team and has excellent support staff.

"It’s a young team, but the management has a clear, long-term vision.

“I’m excited to get to know many new faces, starting next week at the team camp in Spain. I hope to support Fabian (Cancellara) in the Cobblestone Classics and to share my experience with the young sprinters of the team."

The move sees the Belgian join up once again with Trek's general manager Luca Guercilena, who spoke of his delight at the prospect of the pair working together again.

“We’re stoked to have Gert in the team," he said on Monday.

"I know him personally from the times where we were both at QuickStep.

"He’s one of the biggest engines in the peloton and he’s very motivated to have a great season.

"This is a last-minute signing for us and we’ll start working on Gert’s training schedule and race program right away.”

Steegmans has spent the majority of his twelve years as a professional cyclist as a lead-out man, working for the likes of Mark Cavendish and Tom Boonen, rather than a sprinter in his own right.

However, he achieved a notable win in 2008, taking the final stage of the Tour de France on the Champs-Elysées.

Prior to joining Omega Pharma-QuickStep, Steegmans rode for Lotto-Domo, QuickStep-Innergetic, Katusha and RadioShack.
