Juan Jose Lobato (Movistar) took the victory at Stage 2 of the Tour Down Under finishing at Stirling.

Lobato had finished second in the People's Choice Criterium on Sunday behind Marcel Kittel (Giant-Alpecin).

Teammate Gorka Izagirre Insausit finished 3rd behind Daryl Impey (Orica-GreenEdge).

Jack Bobridge (Uni-SA) retained the overall leader's jersey.

The stage began with a frantic early pace and it took a long time for the day's breakaway to form, consisting of Cameron Meyer (Orica-GreenEdge), Campbell Flakemore (BMC) and Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal).

Back in the bunch, it was controlled by IAM Cycling and Sky, who were looking out for Heinrich Haussler and Richie Porte respectively.

In the break, De Gendt took the day's two intermediate sprint points and the only KOM points atop Mylor to go level with Jack Bobridge, who leads the KOM competition in addition to the general classification.

The finish included a circuit in Stirling. The breakaway entered the circuit with a lead of 2'20".

In 2011, Cameron Meyer won the race due to the time he gained in a breakaway which also included Thomas De Gendt. Sensing the danger of the duo, IAM Cycling upped the chase and caught the breakaway with 24.5 kilometres left in the race.

Calvin Watson (Trek Factory Racing) made a move with 19 kilometres to go with Danilo Wyss (BMC), but they were reeled in quickly.

In the final five kilometres, Sky, Orica-GreenEdge and BMC moved to the front to keep their GC contenders safe.

With one kilometre to go, the green and black squad of Cannondale Garmin began their leadout and the Australian in the team, Nathan Haas, launched with 300m to go. Haas misjudged the uphill sprint and burnt quickly, while Impey and Lobato sprinted to the line, with the Spaniard taking the win.

"I am very content to start the season like this and I am grateful for my team. I've had two years of good results, and I couldn't started off 2015 any better," Lobato said.

"The GC? Well, that's more complicated, but we have riders here for the overall.

"I am not discounting anything. I came here to go well on this finale, and I've raced here the past two years. We did some training here last week."
