On Saturday Bristol City welcomed Chesterfield to Ashton Gate as the unbeaten side looked to extend their lead at the summit of League One. Playoff placed Chesterfield matched their promotion-chasing counterparts until injury time when Wes Burns snatched all three points for the Robins with a 3-2 win and now lead the league by five points.

Peterborough jump into second place, albeit having played two more games than the sides in third to fifth. The Posh fell behind early to Crawley Town through Izale McLeod, but Michael Smith, Christian Burgess, Marcus Maddison and Conor Washington replied to register an impressive 4-1 away win.

Sheffield United find themselves a point off the playoff spots after a thrilling finish to their Bramall Lane encounter against 10-man Leyton Orient. Jay Simpson had given the visitors a first half lead before Jobi McAnuff was given his marching orders after the break. The Blades found the equaliser in the 90th minute through Paddy McCarthy which was quickly followed by a Marc McNulty header to give them a 2-1 lead and likely win. But deep into stoppage time the final act fell to Romain Vincelot as he headed in a corner to give the O’s a share of the spoils with a 2-2 draw, whilst falling into the relegation zone.

Oldham Athletic, unbeaten in eight, lay outside the playoff picture on goal difference having played one game more. Goals from Conor Wilkinson and Mike Jones helped The Latics overturn an early strike from Jordan Cook to secure a 2-1 win against Walsall at Boundary Park.

At the opposite end of the table Crewe Alexandra remain firmly in bottom spot even after a 2-1 home success against Coventry City. With no wins in five, The Sky Blues have had to deal with the news that they will ground share the Ricoh Stadium with Rugby Union outfit Wasps from December and their week got no better as Febian Brandy & George Cooper helped the Ralwaymen move within five points of safety.

With Russ Wilcox being dismissed during the week, Scunthorpe United were looking for a turnaround in fortunes and a first away league win this season at Gillingham. In front of prospective new boss Mark Robins the Iron’s impressed with a 3-0 win including goals from Paddy Madden, Neal Bishop and a late Gary McSheffrey strike but remain in 23rd spot.

Yeovil Town now occupy the remaining bottom four position as they dropped into the relegation picture with a 4-1 hammering at Vale Park against Port Vale, who themselves move out of the relegation zone. Tom Pope bagged a brace for Vale as Aaron Martin’s late strike for the Glovers was mere consolation and who find themselves with no points in three league games.

Elsewhere on Saturday relegation threatened Colchester United welcomed playoff chasers Fleetwood Town to the Colchester Community Stadium. Gavin Massey struck twice as the U’s celebrated their first home win of the season and moved into 16th with a 2-1 win, as The Fishermen drop to 12th.

Sunday brought the final game of the Football League weekend and the Sky Sports cameras headed to Oakwell for an all ex-Premier League tie between Barnsley and Bradford City. The Bantams wasted little time in getting their noses in front as Jason Kennedy struck within a minute of play to give Bradford the lead. That lead was to last until the second half when Rory McArdle put through his own net for a Barnsley equaliser and shortly after Sam Winnall turned the game around to give the Tykes the lead. Kane Hemmings added to the home sides tally deep into stoppage-time to give Barnsley a 3-1 win, which sees them climb up to 13th whilst Bradford remain just outside of the playoff spots.
