It was a day to remember for Preston North End and their fans as they finally won promotion to the second division, defeating Swindon Town at Wembley in the play-off final by a score of 4-0.

Despite not seeing much of the ball in the first half, Preston North End were clinical when they got inside the final third of the pitch producing three goals with the first one coming inside two minutes. Paul Gallagher sent in an excellent ball into the eighteen yard box from the left and Jermaine Beckford did well to get in front of his marker to nab the opening goal.

The second goal for PNEFC came twelve minutes later through some defensive errors made by Swindon Town. Swindon were able to clear the ball following a corner and the ball fell to Gallagher once more. The veteran whipped in another cross towards the middle of the six where Paul Huntington was there for an easy tap-in. In the 23rd minute of the match, Swindon's Stevens made a good run coming from the center of the defense to see his shot get deflected and out for a corner kick.

With two minutes to go Smith had a free header inside the 18 yard box miss the target completely and that would be a crucial miss as Preston would go on to score their third goal of the half moments later with Beckford scoring his second goal of the half. His shot took a slight deflection on the way in as the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

At the age of 31, Beckford had himself a final to remember and rounded off a hat trick which was aided by a Kasim turnover in the middle of the pitch, The Swindon footballer, took one too many touches and lost out on a challenge. Beckford made a wonderful run to get in behind the defense as the through ball was perfectly weighted. Beckford was one on one again with Wes Foderingham and this time, he won the battle, giving his club a 4-0 advantage with about a half an hour remaining.

Preston was able to win this match because of their experience all over the pitch and off the bench as well as they were able to bring on the former Bolton Wanderers striker. At the 77th minute, he nearly found the back of the net with a bullet header but Foderingham was right there to make the stop.
