Northampton Town have signed left-back David Buchanan on a free transfer after being released by Preston North End.

The 29-year-old was released from North End this week after they secured promotion back to the Championship.

Buchanan made 69 appearances for the Lilywhites since joining them in 2012 but was out of favour since the start of the year after suffering an injury and not being able to force himself back into Simon Grayson's plans.

Chris Wilder has now made three new signings for the Cobblers this summer. Buchanan joins Alfie Potter and Nicky Adams at Sixfields.

The former Preston man began his career at Bury before moving to Hamilton Academical and then Tranmere Rovers and has made 342 senior starts, scoring two goals along the way.

Wilder will look to have Buchanan as his first choice left back, with Evan Horwood providing good strength in depth for that position. Horwood struggled with injuries last season so the signing of Buchanan will suggest he will be used as a back-up player.
