Manager John Sheridan has left Plymouth Argyle by mutual consent.

The Pilgrims finished seventh but lost 5-3 on aggregate to Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off semi-finals.

Sheridan, 50, had one year remaining on his contract but felt the time was right to move on.

Speaking about his decision to leave, Sheridan said: "I have thought long and hard about the decision and I hope people understand the reasons behind it.

"It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have been Plymouth Argyle's manager for the last two and half years, and I would like to thank the board and the fans for supporting me wholeheartedly during my time at Home Park.

"I believe that I leave the club in a far stronger position to reclaim its place at a higher level of the Football League than it was when I first arrived and I wish it nothing but continued success for the future."

Sheridan took over in January 2013 with the club just one point above the relegation zone but, having failed to get the club promoted back to League One, he has expressed his intentions to move back to the north of England.
