Newport County have announced the signing of Alex Rodman, after the winger declined to exercise his option of a further year at Gateshead.

Rodman becomes new boss Terry Butcher’s fourth signing of the summer after the arrivals of Lenell John-Lewis from Grimsby Town, and Rhys Taylor and Scott Barrow from Macclesfield.

Rodman started his career with midlands giants Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers, before playing at senior level with Tamworth, Aldershot, Grimsby Town and York City.

The 28-year-old made 40 appearances for Gateshead last term, netting 10 times in the process.

The Sutton Coldfield born wide-man almost signed for the Exiles four years ago when he was at Tamworth, whilst Dean Holdsworth was still at the helm.

However, Holdsworth departed before a deal was struck, and instead Rodman signed for Holdsworth’s new club Aldershot.

More signings are expected to arrive at Rodney Parade in the near future, as Terry Butcher assembles a squad he hopes can challenge for a League Two play-off place next season.
