Full-back Elliot Omozusi has completed a transfer from Leyton Orient to Cambridge United on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old has committed to a two-year deal at Abbey Stadium, and joins The U’s after making 149 appearances for Orient.

Hackney-born Omozusi told the Cambridge club website that he is looking forward to getting on the pitch and “just playing football for this club", and is “hoping for a strong season”.

He also added that the club will quietly believe that “there is a good chance of promotion.”

Omozusi started his career at West London outfit Fulham, before loan spells at Norwich City and Charlton Athletic.

In 2010, he then arrived at Brisbane Road, signing for Leyton Orient.

A year later, Omozusi was jailed and subsequently sacked by the East London club for intimidating a witness in a murder case.

After eventually being released from prison, he rejoined the O's in 2013, and after a five-year spell, he joins Cambridge.

Omozusi becomes Orient's fifth summer signing

Omozusi has become Cambridge’s fifth signing of the summer, following the captures of Barry Corr, Leon Legge, Mark Roberts and Keith Keane. And the former England under-19 international Omozusi has spoken of how impressed he is with United’s business so far this window.

Speaking about the signing of Legge, Omozusi added: “he’s a very good player”, while he stated that fellow new boy, 31-year-old Roberts, will “definitely bring a lot of experience (that) you need that if you want to do anything in League Two”.

Cambridge hope to build on the last campaign

Cambridge’s season started promising and the Cambridgeshire club caused plenty of damage at the top end of League Two.

But after their stellar FA Cup tie with Manchester United, their season fizzled out.

U’s manager Richard Money will be hoping that the additions he’s made to his squad will enable his team to build on their 19th-place finish last season, and to make an assault at the top of the table.
