Billy Waters has today joined Cheltenham Town, the club have announced.

Waters has put pen to paper on a one-year contract with the Conference Premier club, signing on a free transfer following his release by Crewe Alexandra earlier this summer.

The 20-year-old plays as a striker and will be hoping to add goals to his new side as they aim for an immediate return to the Football League, after being relegated from League Two at the end of the 2014-15 season. They finished second from bottom, and their total of just 40 goals scored in 46 games - the third lowest tally in the division last season - was a big reason for this.

Waters came through Crewe's youth academy before being promoted to the first team in 2013, at the tender age of just 18. He made nine apperances for the club in the league that season, featuring mainly as a substitute though and failing to score a goal as a result.

This season, Waters played in 11 league games, scoring two goals, and played two League Cup games, scoring another goal. However, his lack of playing time at Gresty Road has forced him to seek opportunities elsewhere, even if that means dropping down two tiers to the non-league.

Cheltenham manager Gary Johnson told the club's website that he believes Waters has "the potential to score 15 or 20 goals a season." Yet, to do so, he thinks the player "needs to play a full season," and thus Johnson has signed him to "[give] him that opportunity" - one he did not get at Crewe.

Waters' promise has been noticed by his national set up on a couple of occasions too, with him being placed on Wales' under-21s stand-by list twice last summer, although he has yet to receive a full call-up for the side.
