Newport County have confirmed the appointment of ex-Ipswich defender Russell Osman as assistant manager to new manager Terry Butcher.

The 56-year-old partnered Butcher in the heart of Ipswich’s defence in the 1980’s and now becomes former England captain Butcher’s number two at Rodney Parade.

His last role came as the Ipswich Town under 18’s manager, where he left the role in August 2013.

Newport boss Terry Butcher has also appointed Steve Marsella as chief scout and goalkeeping coach.

47-year-old Marsella has once again linked up with Butcher after the pair worked together at Brentford, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Hibernian.

Marsella’s main role was as a talent spotter, responsible for finding up and coming players from the lower leagues in England.

His previous roles include managing Leeds United Ladies and coaching keepers at Notts County, Queens Park Rangers, Barnsley, Crewe Alexandra, Accrington Stanley and also spent time in Iceland before his most recent job as goalkeeping coach at Grimsby Town.

And Newport County fans will know his effect well as one of the players Marsella uncovered whilst at Inverness was former Newport captain Gary Warren, who has since made over 100 appearances for the Scottish Premier League side.

Both Osman and Marsella were both present at the first week of pre-season training this week, despite not officially being Newport County employees. But as of yesterday, both are now full time members of the Exiles backroom staff.

Speaking to the South Wales Argus Butcher spoke of how he was "pleased to be able to announce that Russell and Steve are part of the team."

He added: "They’ve both been working hard behind the scenes for a while now but they are officially on board now and we’re looking forward to moving forward together."

Newport’s first pre-season games are underway this week with a local tie against UNDY in midweek before a trip to Port Talbot Town next Saturday.
