Defender Mickey Demetriou has been told he can leave Shrewsbury Town, according to the Shropshire Star, making way for Jermaine Grandison and Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro to re-sign for the club.

Demetriou joined from Kidderminter Harriers last summer and made 42 appearances for the Shrews as they won promotion to League One. But following the arrival of Mat Sadler on free transfer, he has found it difficult to nail down a first-team place.

Junior Brown, who recently arrived from Mansfield Town, is also ahead of Demetriou for the left-back position.

Melllon gives Demetriou the green light

Speaking about Demetriou, Shrewsbury manager Mickey Mellon said: “Mickey is available – I’ve said to him I don’t believe there’s first-team football available for him so if the opportunity to play comes up elsewhere he should take it."

Demetriou was a top performer for Shrewsbury last season and was approached by the Cyprus national team, for whom he qualifies via his grandfather.

Cambridge United enquired about the defender earlier in the summer but they didn't follow up their interest with an offer.

He will likely plag one final game at Shrewsbury this evening when they face his former club Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough.

One out, two in at Shrewsbury

Mellon now hopes to re-sign Grandison and Akpa-Akpro. Grandison has played for Shrewsbury since 2011 and has made over 100 appearances for the club in League One and League Two.

Akpa-Akpro has been at the club since last summer and made 45 appearances last season. Shrewsbury are his fifth English club since he joined Grimsby Town from FC Brussels in 2008.

Speaking on re-signing Grandison and Akpa-Akpro, Mellon told the Shropshire Star: “Hopefully we can get those two lads in because the last few games have shown how important they are for us on and off the pitch.”

After Kidderminster this evening, Shrewsbury face National League side Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park before they open their League One campaign at home to Millwall on August 8th.
