Derby County striker Darren Bent says he is looking forward to helping the club go for promotion this season.

Bent, who joined a free transfer this summer, scored 12 goals in 15 games on-loan at Derby at the end of last season.

New season, new goals

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph, Bent said that "Last season was disappointing in the end" meaning that this time around his side "want to hit everything head on."

He was confident in saying "We want to reach the Premier League, that is our goal," and added that "Derby have missed out in each of the last two seasons so hopefully I can help the team achieve this time."

Should he recapture his form he showed at Charlton and in particular, Premier League Sunderland, he could well be one of the league's most dangerous strikers.

If fellow strike-partner Chris Martin stay fit for the full season, they certainly have the potential to be the most productive pairing in the Championship this season.

On Saturday he scored his only goal of pre-season in a 3-1 win over League One Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.

Shortly after signing Bent, manager Paul Clement said: "Darren is a proven goalscorer and that was something he proved during his loan spell with the club last season.

"He is going to be key in our plans to move forward."

Another turn in Bent's up and down career

At the beginning of his career he managed success at Championship level with Ipswich Town, scoring 47 goals in three seasons before he moved onto to Charlton Athletic where he scored 22 goals in two seasons in the Premier League.

He then moved to Tottenham Hotspur where failed to live to his £18m price-tag with just 18 goals in two seasons. He then revived his career at Sunderland with 32 goals in one and a half seasons before moving to Aston Villa where he struggled to settle in and managed just 21 goals in four years.

His permanent Derby career will truly start next Saturday, when the league season starts with an away trip to Bolton.
