A Tony Watt double inspired Charlton to a resounding 3-0 win over former manager Chris Powell’s Huddersfield.

Powell, a legend at The Valley, took his Terriers side to his ‘spiritual home’, a place he spent eight years at as a player and three years as a manager. However his return didn’t go as intended as a dominant Addicks side eased to victory.

Powell was given a hero’s welcome as he emerged from the tunnel, however that’s as good as the former England international’s day got. Leaving in March last season amid rumours of a fall-out with club chairman Roland Duchatelet, but the home fans were definitely on the opposing manager’s side.

Despite tickets for the game being only five pounds, there was little to entertain the two sets of fans. Strike duo Tony Watt and Igor Vetokele were threatening the Huddersfield goal but couldn’t make anything of their chances. Around the half hour mark the visitors had the ball in the net, but Terriers striker Ishmail Miller’s goal was ruled out as he brought down Addicks ‘keeper Stephen Henderson.

One thing Charlton fans have grown accustomed to is that Johan Gudmundsson can only score goals of a terrific quality. The hosts were awarded a free kick just past the half-hour mark, which Gudmundsson netted from 25 yards out.

Huddersfield looked for a way back into the game but Miller dragged his shot wide of the Charlton goal from the edge of the area. The visitors were made to regret this miss just three minutes into the second half. Vetokele played through Watt, and the Scottish striker steadied before slipping the ball past Alex Smithies in the Huddersfield goal.

Watt was causing all sorts of problems for Chris Powell’s side, and he got his second of the afternoon when with 20 minutes to go, the former Celtic striker grabbed Charlton’s third after firing past Smithies to seal the three points for Guy Luzon’s men.

The hosts are now up into the top half of the table, sitting 12th, while Huddersfield sit 14th, hoping not to be dragged into the relegation dogfight which is beginning to appear at the bottom of the table.
