Brentford manager Mark Warburton says that his side are "fearless" ahead of their play-off semi-final with Middlesbrough despite having lost to the Teessiders twice this season.

The Bees scraped into the play-offs on the final day of their first season back in the second tier as Derby County capitulated at home to Reading, allowing Warburton's men to climb up to fifth.

They will face fourth-placed Middlesbrough home and away, the team which Warburton admits gave his side their "toughest game" of the season in a 4-0 win at the Riverside back in September.

But Warburton believes his side have nothing to fear having dominated Aitor Karanka's side in the return match at Griffin Park later in the season - though a Grant Leadbitter penalty condemned them to a 1-0 defeat.

“These are the memories that live long but we have to make sure the focus is right for another very tough opponent,” said the Brentford boss after their final day victory against Wigan.

“They (Boro) came here for a game on Sky where we did very well but we lost 1-0 to a penalty despite having a lot of chances.

“Up there we had a tough time, probably our toughest of the season, but we have to go there, deliver a performance and hopefully get a good result.”

The 52-year-old believes that "belief is the key thing" in the play-offs, and says that his side have every chance of booking a date at Wembley - where they would play either Norwich City or Ipswich Town.

“Anyone beats anyone and it is a bizarre, incredible league,” he noted.

“Someone warned me after promotion last season that you never know what will happen in the Championship and after one season you know they are speaking the truth.

“Our focus is on what we can control and we can control our preparation and hopefully deliver another great performance in front of a packed Griffin Park.”

He went on to add: “I am delighted for the players.

“The players are fearless, they tasted success last year and want more of it and they’re really well marshalled by the experienced pros.

“To have worked as hard as they have worked all season and be where they are now is great for them. The season isn’t over now, there are two more huge games and hopefully there will be a third one to follow.”
