Real Madrid assistant coach, Paul Clement, is expected to turn down a late offer from Premier League survivors Sunderland in favour of taking charge of Championship club Derby County.

Clement is leaving Real Madrid after Carlo Ancelotti’s dismissal with Rafael Benítez expected to replace him with Clement lined up as Steve McClaren’s replacement at Pride Park in what is been touted as a £1million-a-year-deal.

This will be the 43-year-old’s first managerial role after roles at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and most recently Madrid and is handed the task of earning the Rams promotion something McClaren couldn’t achieve. Despite been top of the Championship in February, a poor run of form saw them miss out on a play-off place on the final day of the season.

The former England manager is highly sought after despite that failure with Sunderland looking at the prospect of bringing the man to the Stadium of Light but will be rivalled by North East rivals Newcastle United for his signature.
