Carlos Carvalhal has been appointed as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager, the club have announced.

The manager brings with him three fellow Portuguese coaches, Joao Mario, Joao Cunha and Bruno Lage, who will all join the backroom staff at the club.

Carvalhal's name has been linked with the job at Hillsborough for a large majority of the summer, with him long expected to succeed Stuart Gray, who was sacked just under three weeks ago by the club.

Carvalhal is an experienced manager

Despite being just 49 years old, the manager brings with him plenty of experience in a coaching career already spanning 17 years. He started out as the manager of fourth-tier Portuguese side S.C. Espinho in 1998, and has since gone on to take charge of the likes of Sporting Lisbon and Besiktas. His last club was Istanbul BB in 2012.

Wednesday's chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, is confident that Carvalhal can drive the team forward. He told the club's website that he believes the new man is capable of moving Wednesday "to the next level," going on to claim that Carvalhal is capable of taking the Owls to their end goal of the Premier League.

The club only recorded a 13-placed finish in the Championship last season, with inconsistency seeing them sometimes right in contention for a play-off spot, but also right in the mix at the bottom of the table at other times.

A new dawn at Wednesday?

As well as producing good results, Chansiri is looking forward to the "attractive, aggressive and entertaining football" that the new manager will implement, believing that Carvalhal's "experience, knowledge and ability" can spark "the start of a successful new era for Sheffield Wednesday."

Chansiri has pleaded the fans to "give everything" to the new manager and his team, because he believes their "support is everything, as is [their] trust," before going on to share his excitement about "the journey [he and the fans] will be sharing together" under Carvalhal's reign.

The manager himself is yet to speak about the move, and will be presented to the media on Thursday 9 July in a press conference at Hillsborough.
