Former Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak has signed for Championship side Birmingham City, the Blues have announced.

Kuszczak is Birmingham's third signing of the summer transfer window so far and their second goalkeeper, following the re-signing of stopper Adam Legzdins, whom  Kuszczak will battle for the number one shirt.

He has agreed terms on a two-year contract at St Andrew's, and will link up with his new teammates as they meet up for pre-season training. Birmingham's first pre-season game comes on the 14th of July, as they travel to face Conference Premier side Nuneaton Town.

Kuszczak has had a colourful time in England

The 33-year-old made his first foray into Premier League football in 2004 with West Bromwich Albion, where he stayed for two seasons. United picked him up in the 2006/07 season, initially on loan, before signing him permanently for a fee of just over £2million the following season to act as a backup goalkeeper.

He endured a fairly difficult time at Old Trafford, never reaching the milestone of 10 league appearances in a season during his time in Manchester.

The Pole was also at the centre of a number of infamous moments, for example as he made his debut for the Red Devils with the name on the back of his shirt reading 'Zuszczak'. He also once took the responsibility for an FA Cup exit to Portsmouth, as he was sent off after all three substitutions had been made, leaving defender Rio Ferdinand to try - and fail - to save the resulting penalty.

However, he also has a number of impressive honours to his name including four Premier League titles, two League Cups and the 2007/08 Champions League.

Kuszczak dropped down a level with Watford

After spending a season on loan with recently-promoted Watford in the Championship, Kuszczak finally departed Old Trafford permanently for Brighton and Hove Albion, where he  spent two seasons as first-choice goalkeeper.

Most recently, he spent the end of last season with play-off hopefuls Wolverhampton Wanderers, though he was only brought in as backup to Mick McCarthy's preferred first-choice keeper Carl Ikeme, who was injured at the time.

A limited international career

Kuszczak made his senior international bow for Poland in December 2003 in a 4-0 thumping of Malta, though his lack of first-team appearances over the course of his career has meant that he has only 11 caps to his name, the most recent of which came in 2012.
