Hull City have today rejected a bid from Bristol City for central defender Harry Maguire. The former Sheffield United man is the subject of a £2.5million bid from the newly promoted Championship side, but Tigers boss Steve Bruce has been quick to reject the offer.

There’s supposedly been a second offer for the 22 year old, but the identity of the club in question hasn’t yet been disclosed. Maguire spent the second half of last season on loan to Wigan, but was unable to prevent them dropping into League One. He made three appearances for Hull and struggled to break into the first team.

Bristol City however have denied inquiring about the availability of Maguire, claiming they talked with Hull about him but made no formal bid. The Yorkshireman wants first team football, and with Hull losing Paul McShane to Reading this week, he’s one step closer to the starting XI.

Wembley Appearance

Maguire started his career at Sheffield United, and actually played against his future employers in the 2014 FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Despite a strong commanding performance in the Blades defence, he couldn’t stop Hull winning 5-3 and going through to the final. In terms of an international presence Maguire was called up to the England U-21’s side in 2012, coming on for Liverpool’s Andre Wisdom in a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland.

Hull could use a player like Maguire this season as they look to bounce straight back from relegation to the Championship, and the drop could see Maguire get his wish and play more, due to the demanding fixture schedule the Championship offers.

However on the other side of the coin Bristol City could offer Maguire the chance to be first name on the team sheet week in week out, which is what he’s after, with the quality Hull have at the back with the likes of James Chester and Michael Dawson, a starting berth seems unlikely for the Blades academy product.
