Newcastle United have confirmed that 23-year-old winger Sammy Ameobi has joined Championship side Cardiff City on a season-long loan, after signing a new contract on Tyneside.

Ameobi's contract had expired at the end of June, but he has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal before agreeing a deal to take him to the Welsh capital.

Ameobi has previous with Cardiff

It will be the second time Ameobi has dropped down to the second division, having spent a short period with North East rivals Middlesbrough, scoring one goal - against Cardiff.

Now, the brother of Newcastle cult hero Shola Ameobi has made the move South with the intention of impressing new manager Steve McClaren after showing temperamental form for the Magpies in recent seasons.

Fast and skilful, the six-foot-four youth academy product has shown glimpses of his potential at times but has failed to really convince fans that he can nail down a consistent first-team place in the Premier League.

He is following his brother's lead on the international stage

He has previously represented both England and Nigeria at youth international level, turning out twice for Nigeria's U20s before making the step up to U21 level with England, where he made five appearances.

Despite this, Ameobi announced last year that he would follow the footsteps of 10-cap elder brother Shola in pursuing an international career with Nigeria, though his club form is yet to warrant a senior cap for the Super Eagles.

However, he does have experience at a higher level which is likely to prove useful for Bluebirds boss Russell Slade. As well as having 52 Premier League appearances to his name, Ameobi made five appearances in the Europa League in the 2012/13 season as the Toon reached the quarter-finals.

Cardiff have won something of a race for his signature, with clubs such as Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers having previously been reported to have been close to agreeing a loan deal.
