Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who finished last season as Charlton Athletic's joint-top goal scorer with 11 goals, has put pen to paper on a new deal at The Valley despite various rumours linking him with a move away from the club.

Gudmundsson persuaded by ambition

When speaking to Charlton's official website, he told the club's fans that manager Guy Luzon is building "a squad for the future", saying that he is just "one part of that". He stated that it was good for the squad to know that "players are sticking around", with "some new signings" coming in as well.

Gudmundsson seems to be matching the club's ambition personally, saying that he wants to "do better than last season" with "more goals and more assists". He admitted that he does have a target number in mind but decided not to reveal it, simply saying that he "always wants to do better" than the previous season.

Charlton look to improve

Charlton kick off their Championship season against QPR on August 8th and if they are to build on last season's impressive 12th place finish, Gudmundsson will need to be firing on all cylinders again.

Since his surprise move from Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2014, Gudmundsson has built up a reputation as one of the Championship's finest attacking midfielders. He slotted into English life in the second division very quickly, saying that he "had confidence in my ability" and "thought I could help the team a lot".

The 24-year-old thanked his manager for "believing in me" and playing him in "almost every game when I was fit", helping him to settle in his first season.

If Gudmundsson can hit the form he did last season, keeping him could prove to be the best business Charlton do all summer.
