Nottingham Forest have completed the loan signing of Leicester City goalkeeper Ben Hamer until the end of the 2015/16 season, the club have announced.

Hamer, 27, is likely to start the season as second choice but will provide competition for Dutch veteran Dorus de Vries between the posts at the City Ground.

The six-foot-three stopper joined the Foxes only last summer as understudy to first-choice Kasper Schmeichel, but found himself thrust into first-team action when the Dane picked up an injury.

A reasonable showing in Premier League action

He finished the season with eight appearances in the Premier League and kept a respectable three clean sheets, including one on his top-flight debut in a one-nil victory over Stoke City. Yet, he lost his place in the first team when Nigel Pearson brought in Mark Schwarzer as a more experienced replacement for the stricken Schmeichel.

Hamer was a product of fellow Championship side Reading's academy, but he never made a senior league appearance for the Royals and left the club in 2011 to join Charlton Athletic.

He has turned out for a number of loan clubs

He had previously been sent out on loan on a number of occasions, spending time with Crawley TownExeter City and most notably Brentford, enjoying three productive spells at Griffin Park across a four-year period.

However, it was not until he made his move to Charlton that he really began to make his name, making over a century of appearances in the second and third tiers of English football during three seasons with the Addicks.

Hamer looks to impress away from the King Power

His form earned himself a move to the King Power Stadium last summer but, although he established himself as a popular figure owing to some impressive performances during his short spell in the first team, he failed to truly challenge first-choice Schmeichel for the number one shirt.

A solid season in the Championship could change that, however, with the 27-year-old likely to be coming close to his prime years as a goalkeeper.
