Former Wales and Cardiff City defender Danny Gabbidon has hinted at his playing days coming to a close after opting out of talks with Leyton Orient.

The 35-year old left Cardiff in June and has been searching for a club since, with the likes of Newport County and Leyton Orient interested in the Football League veteran. Despite the apparent interest, Gabbidon revealed he's edging closer to hanging up his boots for good after a storied 17-year career.

Hanging up his boots

Although Gabbidon appeared for Leyton Orient in a friendly on Saturday, he went on to say that he's likely to retire sooner rather than later. He told the Barry and District News that he was "probably concentrating on hanging up the boots", and would "make a decision in the next week or two."

Gabbidon went on to confirm that he would not be extending his stay with Orient any longer, and would be "deciding again what I'm going to do". He revealed that while he had been in talks with the club, "it didn't feel right going any further with it".

The veteran defender has bounced from club to club in recent seasons, making few appearances, and said he "didn't feel his body was in the right shape."

Gabbidon did appear for MLS side Chicago Fire in a friendly in February, showing signs of a possible move to the United States but that move no longer looks likely, with retirement being the most likely choice.

A long and varied career for Gabbidon

The Welshman has featured for various clubs in his 17-year career, while playing in all divisons from League Two all the way up to the Premier League. Gabbidon has made over 400 appearances in English football, while representing his country 49 times.

The 35-year-old could be set for a career in management if he does retire in the coming weeks, with a very small amount of experience after a brief stint as Co-Caretaker Manager at Cardiff in 2014.
