Ipswich Town have secured the signing of Jonathan Douglas on a one-year deal for a free transfer, the club has announced.

The midfielder, who captained Brentford last season, was told by new Bees head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen to find another club.

The ex-Leeds United and Swindon Town midfielder could make his Ipswich debut against former club Brentford as the sides meet at Griffin Park on Saturday in the opening day of the Championship season.

A loyal servant leaves Griffin Park

Douglas leaves the London side having made 187 appearances in all competitions, scoring 17 goals. He also has eight international caps to his name having being called up by the Republic of Ireland's national side.

The 33-year-old becomes the Tractor Boys' sixth signing so far this summer. Douglas joins along side the likes of Welsh defender Josh Yorwerth who has signed from Cardiff City, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Giles Coke and Guinean striker Larsen Toure.

Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy has also secured deals for Danish international Jonas Knudsen who has joined from Danish side Esbjerg for an undisclosed fee.

Meanwhile former Bournemouth and Bristol City striker Brett Pitman has signed for Town on a three-year deal, also for an undisclosed fee.

Business not over yet

With just four days to go until the start of the 2015-16 season, Blues boss McCarthy is still intent on adding to his squad in the form of Hearts defender Jordan McGhee.

The Edinburgh Evening News reports that the Scottish side have already turned down two bids from Ipswich for the Scotland Under-21 international, the most recent one at £250,000, but McCarthy is now considering whether to return with a third offer.

McGhee currently has a contract at Tynecastle which runs until the summer of 2017, and is seen as a potential star of the future. However, Hearts boss Robbie Neilson has stated that McCarthy's bid does not meet the club's valuation of the player.

The 19-year-old, who can operate at right-back or as a centre-half, has 44 club appearances to his name and 10 international caps.
