Burnley have finally secured their first victory back in the SkyBet Championship at the fourth attempt courtesy of a Michael Keane header, which - in turn - inflicted a first league defeat new Brentford boss Marinus Dijkhuizen.

Visitors start brightly

New Burnley record signing Andre Gray was not eligible to play in the fixture following the completion of a £9million move to Turf Moor, but he watched his former club start the brighter of the two sides early on. It was a frustrating opening 20 minutes for the hosts. Tom Heaton was required to be at his best to get down low and turn away an Alan Judge free-kick.

Five minutes later and, again, Heaton was called into action. A fantastic ball from midfielder Konstantin Kerschbaumer allowed Danish international Lasse Vibe to make a clever run in behind the Clarets' defence. However, Heaton was on hand save the low shot which lacked the necessary power.

Burnley take the lead

The frustration around Turf Moor was clear from the Burnley faithful following the home side's slow start to proceedings and Sean Dyche would have been relieved to see defender Michael Keane settle many nerves with 25 minutes on the clock.

David Jones swung in a corner from the right-hand side and, amidst some slack Brentford marking, Keane rose the highest to head home past David Button for his second league goal of the season; which came in a very similar fashion to his first against Birmingham City.

The former Manchester United centre-back, Keane, has proven to be a considerable threat from set pieces in previous Championship appearances for Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers. Brentford couldn't deal with his threat  and just before before half time he passed up another chance to score.

Two minutes after this Keane header, a now more composed Burnley found themselves knocking on the door once more. Scott Arfield leant back too far and sent his shot flying into the stand from a threatening position inside the Brentford penalty area.

Ten minutes into the second half, Arfield again failed to find his shooting boots. A poor clearance from an out of position Button allowed Arfield to set his sights on goal from an audacious 35 yards out but, thankfully for a scrambling Button, the effort was a whisker past the post.

Brentford lack second half attacking threat

Whilst the Bees lacked the same attacking threat in the second half that they showed in the opening exchanges, there was always a lingering fear amongst the Burnley camp that a second goal would be required to put the game to bed.

Sam Vokes had a wonderful opportunity to so with 20 minutes left on the clock. A quick throw in from Tendayi Darikwa was well dummied by Michael Kightly to set up the opportunity for Vokes, but his hooked strike shaved the cross bar from a glorious position.

Matt Taylor then had another chance to double the Clarets' lead moments after his introduction; a free-kick in an almost identical position to one which he scored from against Birmingham one week ago. This time, however, Taylor could not replicate the feat and the set-piece was just wide of the goal.

As things turned out though, a late and expected Brentford surge failed to materialise and the solitary goal for the Lancashire side proved to be enough to ensure a first three points for Dyche's charges. Dijkhuizen was left to suffer his first championship defeat since arriving from Excelsior.

Courtesy of the result, Burnley and Brentford are now level on four points a piece, occupying 13th and 14th place in the table respectively with the Bees having a game in hand. Next up in the league, Burnley travel to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City whilst Brentford welcome Reading to Griffin Park.
