Cardiff secured their first Championship victory of the season and ensured their unbeaten record continued with a 2-0 home win over Wolves.

It was Wolves who had the first chance inside three minutes as Welsh international David Edwards missed the target from the edge of the box. David Marshall then had to be on his toes to smother the ball as Edwards took a heavy touch after running clear.

Cardiff's first chance came when Joe Ralls played in Joe Mason who's tame shot was parried by Carl Ikeme but no one was there to tap home an easy rebound.

Wolves then spurned a golden opportunity to take a lead into half time. City were slow to react to a quickly taken corner, a back post cross found the unmarked Kortney Hause who somehow missed the target.

Breakthrough for City

A tight first half but it was the home side who went in ahead after patient play saw Fabio loft the ball into the box, Ikeme came out unconvincingly and Kenwyne Jones climbed highest to head home his first goal of the season.

The rain poured down and Russell Slade was forced to bring off his goal-scorer, as Jones picked up an injury in the penalty area.

Lead doubled

Sammy Ameobi was the man to replace him, and he made an instant impact after three minutes of being on the pitch. Lee Peltier headed down a Peter Whittingham corner and Ameobi's slightly deflected effort fired past Ikeme.

In search of his second, Ameobi skillfully found his way past two defenders before his curled effort went just wide.

While Benik Afobe and substitute Nouha Dicko looked lively, Cardiff really should of made it 3-0 right at the end. Mason was clean through on goal after Wolves poured men forward but his chipped effort was easily read. Wolves created no real clear cut chances as Cardiff rose to 7th.

Verdict

Cardiff's performance wasn't pretty but against a free-flowing attacking side like Wolves they handled the game perfectly. City never looked like conceding with top performances from Peltier and Fabio. Whittingham has come under heavy criticism these past few games but his performance was much improved. Ralls was the standout player today as his tenacity and eagerness to track back made Fabio's job so much easier.

As far as Kenny Jackett's Wolves are concerned, they lacked quality all over the pitch. Passes going astray and struggles with communication were far too apparent. Afobe has been linked with a move to the Premier League and if he is interested he has to improve after today's performance. Wolves have lost two in a row and need to rebuild if they are to make a serious promotion push.
