Burnley scored in the third minute of stoppage time to claim a point away to Birmingham City in the Championship, despite the hosts commanding a two-goal lead with five minutes to play.

Aron Gunnarsson and Sean Morrison looked to have given the Blues an unexpected three points, with a goal in each half delighting the home fans.

However, Rouwen Hennings' well-taken goal set the comeback in motion before Michael Keane scrambled the ball over the line in stoppage time to claim a point.

Hesitant opening to an entertaining game

The match began as a fairly cagey affair, with both sides looking tentative in the opening 10 minutes with no real oppportunities of note created.

However, with both teams settled the game opened up into a more exciting affair, with Joey Barton having a shot deflected behind and debutant Tony Watt firing just wide after a driving run through the visitors' defence.

Gunnarsson punishes missed Burnley chances

Burnley went close with 10 minutes of the first half to play, top scorer Andre Gray rounding the goalkeeper and cutting back for George Boyd having been forced wide, but the latter's shot was cleared off the line by the covering defender Connolly.

With the first period drawing to a close, it was the Bluebirds who took an unexpected lead, as Gunnarsson rose highest to head home from Joe Ralls' dangerous set-piece delivery into the area.

Neither side really threatened again in the first half, and the two sides went in at the interval with the hosts in charge of the three points.

Morrison extends hosts' lead

Gunnnarsson went close to doubling Cardiff's advantage soon after the break but saw his low strike saved by Tom Heaton, while Kenwyne Jones headed over from a corner as the Bluebirds looked to press home their advantage.

Just after the hour mark, though, they did make a corner count as Peter Whittingham delivered for Sean Morrison to nod the ball out of reach of Heaton and seemingly set the hosts on their way to an important win.

Burnley strike late to break Cardiff hearts

However, with less than five minutes remaining, Sean Dyche's side were back in the game. German forward Hennings took Boyd's low ball in his stride and turned well before firing past David Marshall, with the home fans left nervous for the closing stages.

Their nerves turned out to be well-founded. Three minutes into stoppage time, a ball into the area caused panic among the home defence and a goalmouth scramble was eventually bundled over the line by Irish defender Keane.

Championship title race remains wide open

The home side will have felt hard done by after a good performance against promotion-chasing opposition, but their late collapse saw the Bluebirds miss out on the opportunity to move into the play-off spots regardless.

Burnley lie in fifth, meanwhile, four points off the top but only two away from the automaic promotion places as the race for the Championship title continues apace.
