Former Middlesbrough midfielder Barry Robson has retired from football at the age of 37.

The 17-cap former Scotland international was signed by Gordon Strachan in 2010, and went on to establish himself as a fans' favourite during a difficult time for the Teessiders.

Robson made over 500 league appearances during a 19-year career, which also saw him feature in the Scottish Premier LeagueMLS and League One.

A memorable spell on Teesside

The fiery midfielder made an instant impression after moving to Middlesbrough, as he was sent off on his home debut in a goalless draw with Bristol City.

His combative style, eye for goal and obvious passion in an era of almost constant disappointment at the Riverside won Robson lots of fans during his two-year spell at the club, and news of his retirement prompted numerous well-wishers to extend their thanks on social media.

Robson stole the headlines on more than one occasion during his time at the club. He scored the fastest goal at the Riverside just 24 seconds into a 3-1 win over Reading in September 2010, and slammed in a stunning left-footed volley against local rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup two years later.

Robson retires after heavy defeat

He captained his most recent side, Aberdeen, in the final game of his professional career but left in disappointment as the Dons, who finished second in Scotland's top flight, were surprisingly thrashed 4-0 at home by Ross County.

"I am definitely retiring," Robson told The Herald in the aftermath of the game. "The boots are nailed to the wall after that performance".

He went on to admit that he had "had a good innings" and would remain in the game in some capacity, but that he didn't want to drop down the divisions as he reaches the age of 38 later this year.
