Wigan Athletic have signed Max Power, the club have confirmed.

The 21-year-old midfielder leaves Tranmere Rovers after he refused the opportunity to renew his expired contract following the club's relegation to the non-league.

Still, with Power being under the age of 24, the two clubs must agree a compensation deal for the transfer. They have failed to do this on their own though and the fee will instead be set by an FA tribunal.

Power made his debut for Rovers in League One as an 18-year-old, but would really establish himself in the side in the following season, their 2012-13 campaign, by making 32 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals.

From there, he became a regular in the team, playing 36 games in the season after and a total of 52 in the season just gone. As well as making his highest number of appearances in 2014-15, Power also scored his highest number of goals, racking up 13 for the season, albeit this was not enough to prevent Tranmere from going down as they finished bottom of League Two.

This week, the midfielder ended a 13 year spell at the club to join Wigan, who were recently relegated to League One. Former captain Gary Caldwell will take charge of the Latics for the coming campaign, having retired earlier this year due to injury, and the 33-year-old has already made several additions to his squad as he prepares for his first full season in charge.

Power becomes Wigan's fifth signing of the summer, and Caldwell had plenty of positive things to say about his arrival to the club's website, starting by saying he is "very happy" with the signing.

The manager believes that, despite having "played [in League One] during his time with Tranmere," Power is "still young" and can "learn a lot from the experienced players in the squad." He concluded by admitting he is "looking forward" to watching the player "develop in Wigan Athletic colours."
