Sammy Ameobi is set to join Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan, according to ESPN.

Ameobi is due to sign a new deal with Newcastle United, with his current deal expiring today, before proceeding to link up with the Championship club on a temporary basis.

The 23-year-old has struggled to pin down a starting berth in the North West, largely on the fringes of the first team since making his debut in 2011, but is keen to remain on the books with his local club and hopefully prove he can be an important figure for them by impressing with Wolves.

West Bromwich Albion are one of three sides interested in the player, as well as La Liga side Real Sociedad and Crystal Palace, who are managed by former Newcastle coach Alan Pardew, a man also keen on the Magpies' goalkeeper, Tim Krul.

The clubs were looking to snap up the speedy winger for free this summer, but now these hopes had been ended with Ameobi to commit his future to Newcastle.

Born in the City where the club are based, the former England youth international joined the Toon's academy at the age of 16. He spent two years there before making his first team debut four years ago against Chelsea at the end of the 2010-11 season. He broke into the team the following campaign and was a regular substitute, making 12 appearances for the club that season.

Still, his opportunities were limited and he was loaned out to Middlesbrough for the 2012-13 season to gain some experience. He did not have much more involvement on his return from the Riverside, but made 27 appearances in the campaign just gone, making it something of a surprise for him to be loaned out for the upcoming season.

However, Wolves manager Kenny Jackett is believed to view Ameobi are a temporary replacement for Bakary Sako, who has chosen not to renew his contract at Molineux and is expected to be signed for free by a Premier League club this summer.

Ameobi has played a total of 66 games for Newcastle in the last five years, scoring four goals.
