Chelsea need success in the upcoming season, it's as clear and simple as that. With all their talent and quality on display, they should be able to win trophies as a sign of their shrewd transfer business, albeit excessive at times.

Former manager Jose Mourinho was brought back by Russian owner Roman Abramovich at the start of last season, not just for the nostalgia effect but to win trophies and bring some glory back to Chelsea - where he thrived in his first spell at the club dating back from the 2004-05 season.

He had already publicly stated that the club were not going to win any silverware last season, and he was right. Perhaps it was mind games, perhaps he didn't want any un-fair expectations being placed on his head but the first season's over now and there is no time for excuses as far as Chelsea are concerned. He has to deliver if he wants to stay in the job, despite being a household name.

They've already spent £85million pounds this summer, which is more than any other team in the league - having finished in 3rd place last season they will be eager to improve and learn from their past mistakes, including the tendency to underestimate weaker opposition in the league which has cost them many points over the calendar year.

Signing Spainsh duo Diego Costa (Atletico) and Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona) as well as Brazilian full-back Filipe Luis (Atletico), legendary striker Didier Drogba (one-year-deal) and youngster Mario Pasalic is a signal of intent from The Blues, but they can only prove themselves if they win silverware in the end to show that their hard work has paid off.

Having won the Europa League two seasons ago after they struggled in the Champions League, it is fair to say that given their squad depth Chelsea should have a team which is good enough to compete again for trophies.

With the likes of players such as Hazard, Oscar, Fabregas, Schurrle and Costa, it is obvious to say that their attacking minded players are top-class - some of the best in the world when they are on-form. As well as that, they have a solid defence, with English defensive duo Gary Cahill and John Terry (Terry retired from international duty) staying at the back, and boasting one of the best defensive partnerships in the league.

They have many youth startlets too, many of which have been loaned out to various European clubs in the past few seasons - but the future is looking bright for Chelsea and you cannot deny that. Zouma, Thorgan Hazard, Piazon and Omeruo among others are young and talented, having already been snapped up by Chelsea's youth academy/first-team scouts in the past.

Having said that, many people will argue that you have to look at the present and the question remains as to whether Chelsea can be successful and win the Premier League again, they haven't done so since 2009-10 so now could be the perfect time to silence the doubters and bring the trophy back to Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City are the current holders, and they certainly aren't unbeatable by any stretch of the imagination - Chelsea need to be consistent throughout the season, and who knows how far they will go.
