With less than a week to go in the summer transfer window, it’s already been a hectic period of deals for all Premiership sides and after an exciting World Cup, some of the best global talent will be on show in England’s elite league. More moves are expected ahead of what should be a frantic deadline day but when the window
closes and we concentrate on matters on the pitch, who will prove to be the best buy of the
summer?

Are City equipped to defend?

Most pundits will look to the big clubs when they attempt to assess this question but reigning  Premiership Champions Manchester City have been relatively subdued by their own big spending standards. Manuel Pellegrini’s men started the season as favourites with Bet homes to win the trophy again but their biggest deal to date has seen the arrival of Eliaquim Mangala from Porto for £32m. A versatile player, Mangala answers a number of issues within the back four but it may be a surprise  that City have not moved for striking reinforcements to boost their injury hit squad. Concerns remain over leading scorer Sergio Aguero who was troubled by problems towards the end of last season while Alvaro Negredo has missed the start of the new season with a broken foot. Mangala will be a quality signing in defence but perhaps the defending Champions should be looking to recruit elsewhere.

The chasing pack

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho appears to have addressed the issues that affected the club’s title  challenge last season. The Portuguese continually claimed that his team were without a striker so will the arrival of Diego Costa prove to be the most valuable acquisition of 2014? The Spanish international scored 36 goals in 49 matches for Atletico Madrid last season – more than Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o combined – and after scoring in both of his opening games, Costa has already shown his value to the team. However, some experts will point to another new face in the Chelsea ranks - that of Cesc Fabregas
who set up two of Chelsea’s goals in their opening win over Burnley. The former Arsenal and Barcelona man is invaluable in so many areas of the field and is already helping Stamford Bridge fans to forget about the name of Frank Lampard.

How do you solve a problem like Suarez?

There are few strikers in World Football whose record can compare with that of Luis Suarez. After scoring at more than a goal a game for much of 2013-14, the Uruguayan finished the campaign with 31 goals from 37 league matches but his indiscretions in the World Cup forced a summer sale to Barcelona. Brendan Rodgers has brought in Rickie Lambert and Divock Origi, who was immediately loaned back to Lille but the Reds manager will be taking a big gamble if he completes the capture of the volatile Mario Balotelli. The Italian international could continue to show the indiscipline that plagued his career at Manchester City or, he may fire the goals that take Liverpool to their first ever Premier League title.

The remaining contenders

Manchester United have been slow to replace Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the heart of the  Old Trafford defence but Louis Van Gaal will hope that Marcos Rojo will be his most important signing to date. Elsewhere, Everton’s capture of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea could lead to the goals that propel  them into the top four places while Tottenham centre back Eric Dier has begun his White Hart Lane career with two goals and two clean sheets. Only time will give us an answer to this question but at this stage of the season, the Chelsea pair of Costa and Fabregas are proving their value to the team and the Premier League.
