Manchester City defender Micah Richards has joined Serie A side Fiorentina on a season-long loan.

Richards spent 12 years at the Etihad Stadium, making 245 appearances in the process.

He was heavily tipped for international greatness with England, but due to serious long-term injuries, he fell behind Pablo Zabaleta in the pecking order at the club.

The Italian side confirmed the rumour in the early hours of deadline day morning on their official Twitter account. The terms of the deal mean that if the spell is successful, Fiorentina then have the option to sign the 26-year-old on a permanent basis.

Current Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany tweeted earlier to wish his former teammate luck: "Manchester City club legend! Proud to have played 6 years alongside this man. Congratulations and good luck at Fiorentina my brother #forzaMicah."
