Former Brighton and Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has been touted by Leeds United’s owner Massimo Cellino as Neil Redfearn’s replacement according to reports.

Redfearn’s current contract expires on June 30 and the Italian has admitted that talks over a new deal have not taken place.

Poyet has been out of work since he was sacked by Sunderland back in March and if he was take the job at Elland Road the Uruguayan would look for assurances of the direction of the club after all the controversy since Cellino’s takeover.

Redfearn stepped up from the academy back in October to become United’s third manager of the season after the sacking of Darko Milanic. The 49-year-old hasn’t done a bad job considering the circumstances and managed to steer them to safety and a comfortable 15th place finish.

Poyet has already worked at the Yorkshire club having acted as Dennis Wise’s assistant during his troubled time at United. He joined a potential list of candidates which apparently include; Nigel Adkins, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Martin Allen
