Sami Khedira has confirmed that he is set to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season after his contract was allowed to run down to its expiry date.

The German international has already admitted his ''hurt'' over being dropped by Carlo Ancelotti and he has now confirmed he will be leaving the Bernabeú on a free transfer this summer, news that will surely interest some of the biggest clubs in Europe. The announcement, which came as no surprise, was made through his Instagram account in which Khedira expressed his sadness at leaving Madrid’s Valdedebas training ground for the final time.

Khedira joined the Galactico’s from his hometown club VfB Stuttgart in 2010 and was a large part of the team that won the Supercopa de Espana and La Liga under Jose Mourinho in 2012. However he has been forced out of the side by the signings of James Rodríguez and Toni Kroos along with Carlo Ancelotti’s preference of playing Luka Modric in the defensive midfield role.

Rumours of a move to Arsenal have been rife in the last two transfer windows and now that the World Cup winner is available on a free, Arséne Wenger is sure to at least be considering a move for the German.

The fact that Khedira’s German counterparts Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker both play their trade in North London may also give them a slight edge over any others sides keen on the midfielder.

However they will face tough competition from the likes of Premier League champions Chelsea, the option of a return to Germany at FC Schalke 04 and this year’s Champions League finalists Juventus, who are the strong favourites to capture his signature.
