During the first Fifa World Cup semi-final between Brazil and Germany, the hosts crashed out in humiliation, leaking seven goals in the process. In an unchanged line-up from the quarters, Germany started without both Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski, however Mesut Ozil started and completed 90 minutes for just the second time this tournament. The second half saw Mertesacker introduced for a defensive master class, whilst Podolski was an unused substitute recovering from injury.

Mesut Ozil played an integral part in a ruthlessly stereotypical German performance. Although he could only claim an assist to his name, the fluidity he contributed when going forward and intricate through balls caused Brazil vast problems. In his 55 touches, 49 passes were made (88% accurate) and two through balls and key passes, which was only bettered by Lahm. One worry would be his finishing. During the latter stages of the game, he was presented a gift of an opportunity, which he was unable to finish. Thankfully for the Arsenal man, his team were already six goals ahead and it had little significance.

During the second half, we were graced with the presence of Per Mertesacker, Arsenal’s BFG. Unfortunately for Per, the Brazilians came out resurgent as ever in an attempt to salvage some dignity. This meant his passing accuracy plummeted to new depths, at 88%. His six effective clearances do prove his commanding display, and furthermore the goal was directly the fault of his defensive partner, Jerome Boateng, who stepped out of line to play onside Oscar.

Arsenal target Sami Khedira perhaps had the best game of the three. His contribution was more than the ulitization of his name for puns (you Khedira pin drop!). The Madrista performs majestically, as his power and pace terrorised Brazil’s double pivot. His goal and assist capped off his impressive return from injury. Despite all the aforementioned praise, it is unlikely he shall be signed unless Wenger decides to convert Arsenal into a 433.
