Not many would of heard of Arsenal's most recent prodigy coming through the ranks in their academies, but at just 17 years of age, Gedion Zelalem is already making a name for himself amongst the Arsenal squad.

So much so that former Arsenal youth team prospect Jack Wilshere, who has walked the same path as the 17 year old has spoken of his respect for the young German.

Speaking to reporters in Austria, Wilshere said: "He's a great kid and that's the main thing. He's willing to learn, he's willing to listen, he's respectful and he looks up to us.

"He always asks questions about what he should be doing. The main thing is his ability - that's the key thing with him.

"Maybe he needs to get a little bit stronger but his ability will take him through.

"Gedion's got so much natural ability and the right attitude towards the game. Naturally he's going to become stronger and he's training with great players."

Gedion has been impressing during pre-season training and also spoke of his ambitions for the near future: "There's been a lot of support from the fans which was good.

"At the moment I'm just trying to break into the Arsenal first team. I'm just trying to play football at Arsenal."

So who is Gedion Zelalem?

Born in Berlin, to Ethiopian parents, Zelalem was spotted by former Arsenal player and chief scout Daniel Karbassiyoon, who has a talent for spotting future stars and is also credited as the man for discovering Costa Rican World Cup star Joel Campbell.

At just 14 years of age, Zelalem was inviting for a trial at Arsenal.

Gedion impressed Arsene Wenger to the extent that not only did he secure a place at the academy when he turned 16, but also was given a parting gift of an Arsenal jersey with his name and the number 4, presented to him by Wenger himself.

Rather fittingly, Zelalem has drawn many comparisons with former Arsenal playmaker Cesc Fabregas, who also donned the number 4 jersey.

As a deep-lying playmaker who is more than happy to roam further forward Gedion Zelalem has been praised for his wide range of passing and his ability to read the game.

It's not just in England where Zelalem has drawn publicity, his native German newspaper the Rheinische Post also heaped praise on the teenager in an article written in August of last year and conceeded that his creativity and vision are so outstanding that "one can scarcely believe he’s only 16 years old".

Zelalem has played for Germany under 15's all the way through to under 17 level when he made his debut in a friendly back in November 2013 against Spain's under 17s.

Zelalem played a relitively quiet 45 minutes in the 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat to New York Red Bulls, as Arsenal brought an end to their tour of America.

Interestingly for USA, Gedion Zelalem could be a future international for the Americans, if German coach Jurgen Klinsmann can persuade him to choose the United States over Germany (and parent nation Ethiopa to be meticulous), as the USA look towards Russia 2018 after a successful World Cup in Brazil.

Although being eligible to play for USA and Ethiopia, the youngster has shown no sign of intent to deviate away from his desire to represent Germany at first team level, having already made 11 appearances throughout international youth level.
