The Emirates Cup originated in 2007, the first season that Arsenal played at the ground since its construction. The first competition included Inter Milan, Valencia and PSG who at the time were very strong clubs in European football. Since then, Arsenal have invited teams such as Juventus, Hamburg, Galatasaray, Atletico Madrid, FC Porto, Napoli, New York Red Bulls and many more – showing the World that it is no walkover competition for the Gunners; who have won it three times out of six, facing strong opposition teams, thus proving that it is harbours very competitive games.

Within this newer competition, there have been many big names both in youth and regular first team players – especially from the host’s ranks. Jack Wilshere broke through to Arsenal’s first team using the Emirates Cup as a chance to shine in pre-season, as well as young players like Gibbs, Lansbury, Randall, Carlos Vela, current star Aaron Ramsey, Szczesny, Fran Merida, and finally, Nico Yennaris and Emmanuel Frimpong – of which only a few have made an impact in Arsenal colours since those appearances.

Any tournament is never as special without the fans behind it, which the Emirates Cup receives plenty of. Every year the Gunner’s newest home gets filled with excited fans that cannot wait to see what the new season has in store, in new signings, young talent and the form of the players whose place in the squad is already stable. Of course this fantastic event is so close to the new season that it allows time for the new players to be signed and get plenty of action in front of the atmospheric Gunners faithful, giving them an early taste of what is to come.

When it comes to other tournaments played by many Premier League clubs, none are played with the passion, determination and quality that you see at the Emirates every pre- season, with a lot less fans and less competitive games.

Overall, what makes the Emirates Cup so special is that it brings together the Arsenal community into a thrilling few days creating a mesmerising atmosphere viewing top football, played by top clubs alongside Arsenal, showcasing top young and old players from all clubs involved and being a great competition to compete in.
